Taste of the Danforth

A long-standing summer Toronto tradition was cancelled again this year.  For the second year in a row.

Taste of the Danforth. It has been going since 1993, and I've been going regularly throughout the decades.

It is something I have brought my son to so we can enjoy the food and the music.

Why should a Ward so far away care? The city has been stepping up for other festivals and parades in the past, but is ignoring this one. That I think is selective and speaks to the Mayor's priorities. The Taste of the Danforth past attendance records exceeded 1.5 million people over the weekend. That's a huge boost for local small businesses and restaurants. We should care about our local small businesses and restaurants, they are our neighbours after all.

We are a diverse multi-cultural city, we have named a lot of "Little (ethnic)" areas in the city and Taste of the Danforth is the one festival that started the whole street party weekend festival model. The city has benefited greatly from this. Even though the city doesn't have a sales tax, it does get transfers from other levels of government for the amount of sales tax it generates.

I am saddened but not surprised by the cancellation of the Taste of the Danforth 2025. If I am elected as Councillor for Ward 25 Scarborough-Rouge Park I will be following this situation closely, asking questions and listening to the local stakeholders.

I would like to start local festivals, summer fun and business boosters for all local areas in Ward 25 working with the local business associations and residents. We just had MegaBlast South Asian Street Fest this weekend on Sheppard Ave E.

I hope that the Taste of the Danforth comes back.
