I support Law Enforcement. I support the Toronto Police Service, the OPP, and Law Enforcement Agencies across Canada.
These hard-working men and women live in our communities and keep us safe. We should give them all the tools they need to respond to the challenges they go through every day. This includes laws that stop the revolving door bail system that we have now.
We have heard in the news recently of the 71 year old woman who was killed by a 14 year old in North York. He was out on bail for stealing cars. There is a social media video/post, of him admitting the crime! Today, he has been caught, arrested, and with that Judicial Authorization to Identify Young Person has expired, so I won't be naming names.
This is just one example of many, and it seems like it is increasing, of types of crimes that are occurring across Toronto, the GTA, and really across Canada. Car Jackings, Car Theft, Home Invasions, Construction Equipment used to break into banks, Jewellery Store robberies...just increasingly violent crimes being perpetrated in our communities.
Toronto City Council has no direct authority to change bail laws or sentencing laws...but Toronto City Council can come together to petition the Federal Government to make changes to the laws that they enacted that have brought us this "soft-on-crime" approach from judges.
If you support law enforcement, and I do, I need to support the tools that keep repeat, violent offenders in jail.
If elected Toronto City Councillor, Ward 25 Scarborough-Rouge Park, I will work to get a motion approved to call on the Federal Government to make changes to bail and sentencing laws, and for other municipalities across the country to join us in demanding these changes.
We owe it to the innocent victims, we owe it to their families, and we owe it to the police officers.
