Google "Australia Spare Rooms Tax" and see for yourself! Could Toronto, with its current council makeup and budget shortfall, consider a similar tax?
We already have a Vacant Homes Tax. We are now required to declare yearly whether our homes are unoccupied for a certain length of the year. If we fail to make the declaration, or if the homes remain vacant for too long, a tax is applied.
Many ideas are floated or implemented in other jurisdictions, and if deemed a "success," become a template for other large city jurisdictions to follow suit.
If this idea is ever floated at Toronto City Council...I would be firmly OPPOSED.
